Snack on this: Citrus salad

I've decided to start a series titled SNACK ON THIS. I'll give healthy, whole food alternatives instead of what comes from a vending machine. I'll also discuss the health benefits of eating this particular snack.

So with that here's the first post!

Citrus fruits—lemons, limes, tangerines, oranges and grapefruit—are a great source of phytochemical limonene and an excellent source of vitamin C which supports the immune system. Did you know that one orange supplies over 100% of the daily amount of vitamin C? Vitamin C is a water soluble antioxidant that disarms free radicals and prevents damage in cells. This is why high amounts of vitamin C are thought to reduce cancer risk. If you suffer from asthma, include citrus fruits in your diet as vitamin C supports the lungs. Oranges and tangerines also contain the an antioxidant known as beta-cryptoxanthin which is thought to lower one's risk of lung cancer. Grapefruit also contains the powerful antioxidant, lycopene (yes, also in tomatoes).

If you're starting to get sick reach for an orange or grapefruit as they are natural cold-fighters. Also choose the thin-skinned fruits instead of the thick-skinned as they contain more juice. Enjoy!

Well, I am at home today, sick, from work, so I may just have to give this a try! Are there good citrus fruits at Whole Foods this time of year?
