A New Chapter

Today marks my first week of being a freelance designer. I lost my job last week. Sure I’m nervous about not having a steady income, but this door opened and I’m seizing the moment. I'm excited about the flexibility this provides (noon runs anyone?), and I've had the opportunity to work on some great projects with great people so far. I'll have more time to spend in the kitchen and here, which I’m definitely looking forward to. Now I have more time to make grits with Gruyere for breakfast or chickpea pancakes topped with veggie curry for dinner. Yum.
Gruyere with grits, yes please!

I've also realized I can play music out loud all day. Music is a big part of my day-to-day, whether I'm working or cooking. In the kitchen, I’ve been listening to James Blake, Sharon Van Etten, Mountain Man and The Tender Fruit. Sometimes I turn on Bonnie Prince Billy or Cat Power for something quieter. I get on kicks and listen to albums on repeat. I've done that with Beach House, Neko Case and Arcade Fire. And there are days where I channel my parents and turn on Fleetwood Mac or The Eagles. What are you currently listening to?

I started freelancing a about 9 months ago now and I have to say that even though there are scary bits and a huge learning curve on certain things. I am happy every day that I am doing it. Good Luck! :)

Good luck with the freelancing! I'm sure you'll do brilliantly, and having the extra time to cook proper breakfasts or an elaborate lunch is always fun :)

I'm listening to Ben Folds - Songs for Silverman. On repeat. For weeks. I love it.

I've been reading your blog for a while but this is my first comment. I'm a graphic designer too, thinking of going freelance in a couple of years, so I just want to wish you well! I imagine that the freedom will be one of the best parts, and I'm looking forward to more of your delicious food. :)
